Description: This striking gorilla sculpture by David Wynne was completed in 1961 and installed here in 1962. It depicts the much loved Guy the Gorilla of London Zoo, in black marble, and has been grade II listed since 2016.
Guy was a western lowland gorilla brought from West Africa to London Zoo on 5th November 1947 (Guy Fawkes Day), and named thus. He became one of the zoo's major attractions, until he died during an operation in 1978.
He can also be seen in the Natural History Museum.where his taxidermied remains can be viewed. There is also a later bronze statue by William Timym, installed at London Zoo in 1982.
Wynnes statue was installed here in 1962 near to the children's zoo in Crystal Palace Park which subsequently closed in 1990.
