French highwayman Claude Duval Caught in this boozer
Location: The Marquis, 51-52 Chandos Place, Covent Garden, WC2H
Description: This is where French highwayman Claude Duval (born Du Vall 1643 to 21 Jan 1670) was caught.
It was then called the Hole in the Wall, and later the Marquis of Granby.
On 17 January 1670, judge Sir William Morton found him guilty of just 6 of the robberies he was tried for, but was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging.
Despite many attempts by several people to intercede, the king did not pardon him and he was executed on January 21 at Tyburn.
