Do They Know It's Christmas
The scene of the recording of the Live Aid title track.
Location: Sarm Studios, 8 - 10 Basing Street, London, W11 1ET
Description: These studios were originally known as Basing Street Studios, and were established by Chris Blackwell - founder of Island Records. Set within an old church that has been deconsecrated, Chris Blackwell developed artists such as Iron Maiden, Bob Marley, Steve Winwood, Free, Bad Company, and Robert Palmer.
During the Island years, Basing Street Studios was used by all their top acts, most notably Nick Drake, John Martyn Fairport Convention, Free, Mott The Hoople, Roxy Music, Traffic, Cat Stevens and Bob Marley and the Wailers.
But everyone became aware of Basing Studios on Sunday 25 November 1984, the unforgettable day when Bob Geldof assembled the cream of Britain’s pop stars for the recording of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?.
Bob Marley also lived here in the apartment block of the Blue block of sarm studios for a year, which now is a writing space.
The studio is currently owned by SPZ Group which is a holding company belonging to Trevor Horn and his wife Jill Sinclair. The Sarm Studios complex also contain the offices of sister companies ZTT Records and Stiff Records.
