The World's First Tube Line

The first Underground Line in the world was opened here in 1863
Location: Off Faringdon Road
Description: The first Underground Line in the world was opened here in 1863 - at Farringdon Tube Station.
It was constructed by the 'cut and cover' method, and brought people from Paddington to the outskirts of the City. The open carriages were pulled by steam engines, which resulted in smoke enveloping the mainly smartly dressed City workers.
For the first four years of operation, passengers could alight here and walk the short distance to Newgate to witness public hangings, which were only abolished in 1867.
Nearby is the Castle Pub, which has three golden balls hanging outside. This is the only pub to have a pawnbroker's license, because the landlord once lent George IV money to cover his gambling debts.
