Description: Dame Ellen Terry (18471928) was an English stage actress who became the leading Shakespearean actress in Britain in the early 20th century. Two of her most famous roles were Portia in The Merchant of Venice and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. She and Irving also toured with great success in America and Britain.

She lived here from 1889 to 1902.

Terry held strong views on the characters she played. She particularly disliked Desdemonas weakness and passivity and believed that Lady Macbeth is no monster. Her strength is all nervous force, her ambition is all for her husband.

Among the members of her famous family is her great nephew, John Gielgud.
