Titanic Survivor Eva Hart

One of the last survivors of the Titanic disaster.

Location: St Chads Park, Chadwell Heath

Description: A memorial to one of the last survivors of the Titanic disaster, Eva Hart, who spent most of her life in Chadwell Heath, was put in the park here in 1996. On 20th February 2020, the British Titanic Society, the Swiss Titanic Society and Barking and Dagenham Council gathered to unveil a new plaque here.

Eva, who was born in Ilford, was just seven when she boarded the Titanic with her parents to start a new life in Winnipeg, Canada, when the ship fatally struck an iceberg.

Eva (who was made an MBE in 1974) and her mum Esther survived, but her dad Benjamin was among more than 1,500 passengers and crew to drown.

As an adult Eva spoke out about the disaster and criticised the lack of lifeboats on the vessel. She was involved with many films and documentaries about the sinking of the Titanic. Hart died on the 14th February 1996 in a hospice in London, two weeks after her 91st birthday.
