Arthur Askey first digs

The first digs comedian Arthur Askey stayed in London.

Description: When Liverpudlian comic Arthur Askey got his first proper contract outside of Liverpool, he had to rehearse in The Volunteer in Brixton on the 17th March 1924 before a run of shows in Colchester.
The fresh young talent bought his props, jumped on the train from Lime Street and set off for his digs here with Robertson. She was well versed in music hall etiquette and showed him the ropes. She had performed with a group called the Musical Watsons (and her son was the actor Wylie Watson (appeared in Hitchcocks The 39 Steps).
