Mary Poppins author lived here
The home and inspiration behind Mary Poppins.
Location: 50 Smith Street, Chelsea
Description: This was the home of Australian author Pamela Lyndon Travers (1899-1996) and was part of the inspiration for Jane and Peter's 17 Cherry Tree Lane in her famous Mary Poppins stories.
The series of books have been adapted many times, including in the classic 1964 film starring Julie Andrews, and subsequently the stage musical.
P.L. Travers left for England in 1923 and used her initials to disguise that she was a female author.
Pamela worked closely with Walt Disney himself on the Disney adaptation and became frustrated at their constant americanisation of the novel to screenplay, at one point sending Walt a photo of her front door from here at 50 Smith Street to show how the house should look.
