Description: This is the birthplace of celebrated author and philosopher Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936).
He was well known in his lifetime as a philosopher and lay theologian, and was once labelled the 'prince of paradox' by his biographer Douglas. Time magazine observed of his writing style: 'Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegoriesfirst carefully turning them inside out.'
Chesterton was a prolific writer publishing 80 books, 200+ poems, many short stories and newspaper columns/articles/opinion pieces. He is also celebrated for creating the fictional priest-detective Father Brown.
