Fleming Museum & Penicillin
This is where penicillin and antibiotics were born in 1928.
Location: St Mary's Hospital, Praed Street, London, W2 1NY
Description: The laboratory where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin has been restored here to its cramped condition of 1928 and incorporated into a museum about the discovery and his life and work.
Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in a small, musty, dusty laboratory at St Mary's Hospital in 1928. This discovery revolutionised medicine and there are very few people whose lives have not benefited from it.
It is open to the public from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 1pm and can be visited by appointment outside of these times.
St Mary's continues to be a centre of medical innovations as part of the UK's first Academic Health Sciences Centre, the UK's foremost medical research and innovation centre.
