The Islington Gibbett
This is the location of hangings and a 18th century gibbett.
Location: Holloway Road, Islington
Description: This junction was for centuries known as Ring Cross, and during the eighteenth century this was the location of a turnpike. A gruesome gibbet was set up here to punish and discourage highwaymen and other rogues.
One such was John Price who in March 1718 was hanged here for the murder of Elizabeth White, a gingerbread
saleswoman. The execution pulled a good crowd because Price, under the alias
Jack Ketch, had been public hangman for many years.
