Location: 155 Lauderdale Mansions South, Maida Vale

Description: The legendary Oscar-winning actor Alec Guinness was born as Alec Guinness de Cuffe in a small flat here on the 2nd April 1914.

His mother (Agnes Cuffe) was on her own and his father's name was mysteriously left blank on his birth certificate. It is rumoured that his father was a wealthy businessman who he met later in life.

Alec made his acting debut at the Old Vic Theatre in 1936 and went on to make many classic films such as Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Oliver Twist, Little Dorrit and The Ladykillers.

He is probably best know today for his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas Star Wars.

Alec Guinness died in West Sussex on August 5th 2000 from liver cancer.
