The Florence Tavern

The Florence Tavern

This is where world champion fighter Jack Burke was landlord.

Location: 49 Florence Street, Islington , N1 2DU

Description: The newly refurbished gastro-local Islington pub The Florence Tavern has one famous Landlord in it's locker.

After his retirement Jack Burke, also known as The Irish Lad, became landlord here in November 1895 leaving the following year. He started as a bare knuckle fighter on Hackney Marshes but went on to win the English Middleweight and claimed the World Middleweight title too as well as a record (but unqualified) 517 bouts!

Hi, My GG Uncle was Jack Burke the owner. Was amased to find this as I had written to the pub many years ago to ask if there was any info on him. Would love to hear from you. Gloria Thienel ()
