The Culpeper
East London pub with its own herb garden on the roof.
Location: 40 Commercial Street, Whitechapel, E1 6LP
Description: This delightful pub is spacious, open, warm and classy - but the best is the Culpeper Rooftop Garden with its stunning views of the city. This green oasis is where vegetables and herbs are grow year-round in the open air by the kitchen staff to adorn their dishes and cocktails.
Built in 1850, and rebuilt in its present form in 1883, this old boozer was formerly known as the Princess Alice until 1988 when it was called City Darts until 2014.
It survived World War II and reputedly was proud that it never closed even when nearby buildings got badly damaged.
