A super-deep 1940s shelter was located here

Location: Tottenham Court Road, W1T 2HE

Description: In times gone by (thank the lord) and after World War II and the hideous bombings of the 1940s, the government decided to build a system of super-deep shelters attached to existing tube stations.

And so to Goodge Street, which was one of the many locations.

Holding 8,000 people, it was also the spot chosen by General Eisenhower for his own personal HQ (how nice for us!) from which he broadcast the announcement of the invasion of France in 1944.

What a nice man...! Still at least this shelter kept Londoners safe.
