English National Opera
Look up & take in the architecture and the Coliseum sphere
Location: St Martin's Lane, London, WC2N 4ES
Description: The London Coliseum is Britain's only full-time repertory opera company, designed by the theatrical architect Frank Matcham for the impresario Sir Oswald Stoll.
Also known as the Coliseum Theatre was built as one of London's largest and most luxurious family variety theatres. Opened on the 24th December 1904 as the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties.
It was a pioneer of theatre being the first in Europe to provide lifts to the upper levels, and also the first theatre in England to have a triple revolve stage installed.
Bizarrely, in 1908 it played host to a cricket match between Middlesex and Surrey.
A fantastic place to visit in itself, but...why not 'look up' and take in the glorious architecture and that gorgeous rotating 'Coliseum' sphere...
